Indepth Arts News: "A Gift to Montana: Jaune Quick-to-See Smith s Prints " 2000-04-27 until 2000-06-17 Art Museum of Missoula Missoula, MT, USA United States of America
From April 27 through June 17, the Art Museum of Missoula is exhibiting prints by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith in their Second Floor Gallery. Smith has generously pledged one of every print in her oeuvre to the Contemporary American Indian Art Collection, which is part of the Art Museum of Missoula Collection. This special collection is dedicated to preserving and promoting the work of exceptional American Indian artists who have lived or worked in Montana and the West.
The prints in this exhibition comprise the first selection of work from Smith, and only a small percentage of her generous gift. The Art Museum anticipates many more exciting images representing Smith's prolific career.
Although Smith lives and works in New Mexico, she is an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation and remains active in promoting the growth of educational and cultural opportunities on the Flathead Reservation. Smith's artwork consistently confronts ideas of representation, ideology, and cultural history.
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 12 – 6 p.m., Tuesday evenings until 8 p.m. Suggested admission: 2 dollars. For more information or questions, please call 728-0447. The Art Museum is located at 335 North Pattee, in downtown Missoula
