The mandate the Art Gallery of Bishops University is to serve as a forum for the presentation and examination of the visual arts through the programming of contemporary exhibitions. Throughout fall 1999 the gallery encouraged submissions from emerging and established artists and curators of the eastern townships of Quebec. Following the call for submissions, they received 25 applications from which the jury chose 5 artists. Consistent with their overall exhibition objectives, this exhibition will highlight the work of the artists who are innovative in their use of materials and approach to subject matter.

The title Vernissage is from the French vernis. For 19th century painters, no day was more stressful than Varnishing Day; the artist’s last chance to apply finishing touches to paintings hung on gallery walls. Sealing the barely dry artworks with varnish marked the end of creation and the beginning of judgement. The artists featured in the exhibition are:Jean Gaudet (painter); Louisette Gauthier-Mitchell (painter); Arnaud Gosselin (painter) Normand Rajotte (photographer); Francine Boivin (drawing) & Daniel Roy (writing)
