"Ernesto Neto"
2000-06-01 until 2000-07-02
Institute of Contempotary Arts
London, , UK United Kingdom

The first UK exhibition for Ernesto Neto, a young Brazilian artist who makes sensuous worlds to enter and experience. He stretches translucent white lycra into voluptuous sheer environments, and puncuates them with elegantly poised pendulous shapes and oversized ovaloid forms filled with pungent spices, sand and pigments. Playful and erotic, these structures entice the spectator into becoming an active participant, able to touch, smell and walk through the work.

Neto's installations (inspired by the legacy of historic Brazilian artists Lygia Clarke and Helio Oiticia) perform an unexpected twist on the abstract tradition, re-orientating formalist experimentation towards the body. Uncanny and beautiful Neto's environments are places for discovery and dreaming, wonder and contemplation.
