"Sharon Kopriva: Work 1986-1998"
2000-06-09 until 2000-08-20
Menil Collection
Houston, TX, USA

The exhibition features sixteen small paintings, painted reliefs, sculptures, and important tableaux by Sharon Kopriva. Kopriva's interest in the ecclesiastical world and the spiritual realm is reflected in works bearing such titles as The Confessional, From Dust Thou Art, Seven Deadly Sinners, and Catherine's Wheel.

The deeply human tradition of memento mori, creating a remembrance of death, is an identifying element of her work. Kopriva's vivid figurative creations confront viewers with the darker, even decadent aspects of Roman Catholic archetypes, pagan mythologies, and Old World legends. Her reliquaries, liturgical pieces, mummified figures, and cryptic tableaux meditate on death and dying while struggling to find godly presence on earth.
