Eye catching images from a journey to Vienna. Photographs from 1860 -
1910 from the collection of the Historischen Museum, Vienna.
Discover the Vienna of a time when a circular pattern of streets were a
syonym for a period of cultural highlife. Vienna showed a strong passion
not to lag behind London or Paris.
Thus, on May 1, 1873 the Fifth World
Exhibition open on the Prater in Vienna. During this period of stormy
economic development photography studios were cleary influenced by it. A
good clientle was the self-emanzipating bourgeois.Through photographic
portraits the bourgeois was manifesting their position in society. During
the second half of the 1860's there were already around 150 established
photography studios... some specializing in architecture, urban living or
portraiture. The Historische Museum owns a treasure from this period of
early Viennese photography.
