"POP PLASTICS: Molding the Shape of the 1960s"
2000-06-30 until 2000-08-27
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Scottsdale, AZ,
USA
At the beginning of the 1960s, a new generation of artists started exploring the aesthetic possibilities found in
everyday life and consequently blurred the distinctions drawn between high art and popular culture. Designers
rejected the industrial and functional look prevalent in the '50s in favor of a design vernacular which reflected the
technological advances of the past decade, and appealed to the needs of a fast-paced consumer-driven society.
Pop Plastics highlights some of the most innovative design objects made during the '60s, ranging from the Ball
chair to the Trimline telephone. The objects presented illuminate important design motifs and choices of
materials, as well as color and surface treatments. The exhibition is curated by Robert Sentinery in collaboration
with the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Organized by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
