Gabriel Brandt's large color portraits feature nude subjects isolated against
vestiges of rural scenery found on the outskirts of the contemporary American
sub/urban landscape. The subjects all stand facing the camera, aware of being
observed but neither uncomfortable nor concerned.
Brandt juxtaposes the
familiar and the discrete in the strong presence of nature, making offhanded
allusions to traditional standards of beauty and magnificence in context of the
everyday, and the portraits become fleeting, temporary metaphors for a notion
of self.
