From
the Collection of Ted Turner"

The American frontier is the theme of an exhibition at the High
Museum of Art featuring more than a dozen paintings from the
collection of Ted Turner. Visions of the Frontier: American
Landscapes from the Collection of Ted Turner consists
primarily of works by eminent 19th-century landscape painter
Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902). Bierstadt and Thomas Moran
(1837-1926) were credited with introducing Easterners to the American West through their highly illustrative and
romanticized paintings.
Moran, also represented in this show, focused much of his attention on painting scenes of areas
now protected by the National Parks system. Turner's collection is marked by superb paintings that depict the depth,
range and stunning beauty of the untarnished American terrain. This installation is anchored by thirteen Bierstadt
paintings, including Buffalo on the Montana Plains, Liberty Cap, Yosemite, and Niagara Falls from the American
Side. Completing the exhibition are Thomas Moran's Grand Canyon - Hance Trail (1904), his Grand Canyon
(1911), and Jules Tavernier's El Capitan. This exhibition is the latest installment in the High's series featuring loans
and gifts from Atlanta-area collectors.
