Indepth Arts News:
"Tom Friedman"
2000-07-08 until 2000-10-01
Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
Chicago, IL,
USA
This exhibition of work by Tom Friedman is the first
museum survey of the artist's career. Friedman,
who graduated from the University of Illinois at
Chicago, is known for his use of such common
materials as toothpaste, toilet paper, chewing gum,
and pencil shavings to create modest, often
humorous works that transcend artworld trends.
The exhibition will include approximately thirty of
Friedman’s sculptures, works on paper, and other
pieces, including new works made especially for this
show, in the MCA's Turner, Cohen, and fourth-floor
lobby galleries. The MCA is the first venue for the
national tour of this exhibition, which was organized
by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art,
Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
