What is art's role in society? Can art be utilised and if so, for
what? The Californian artist Jorge Pardo is an outstanding
representative of that movement in contemporary art which tries to
come to grips with the relationship between design and art.
Pardo's playful delight in experimentation leads him to take ever
new exploratory trips into the realms of design, architecture,
painting and graphics, on which he questions apparently
self-evident distinctions between art and the everyday, sculpture
and utility goods, two and three-dimensionality, or private and
public space.
While Pardo's works assume very different forms - and integrate
chairs, lamps, pictures, photographs, houses, floor coverings and
books - the artist is always reacting to the given context. The
spatial, social and historical dimensions of various places are
decisive for Pardo's art, for which reason the artist always
designates his works as sculptures, irrespective of the media he
uses.
