Indepth Arts News:
"PARIHAKA"
2000-08-26 until 2000-12-19
Wellington City Gallery
Wellington, ,
NZ
This nationally significant exhibition will commemorate and explore one of the
major historical events in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand; the invasion of
Parihaka, Taranaki by Pakeha soldiers in 1881. The exhibition will consider the
events leading up to the invasion and the immense strength and spirit of the
Parihaka community which continues today. One hundred years of art, poetry and
waiata will be brought together for the exhibition.
This project will comprise a gallery-wide exhibition at City Gallery, which will
include existing artworks depicting the story of Parihaka and its leaders, Te
Whiti o-Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi. New pieces about these subjects will be
commissioned from both Maori and Pakeha artists. These will be augmented by
historical and contemporary photographs.
The exhibition will be further complemented by a major publication and a
television documentary.
Parihaka is a joint project between City Gallery, Wellington and the Trustees
of Parihaka Paa. Sponsorship to be confirmed.
