Indepth Arts News:
"Steve Ouditt: Creole Processing Zone [with English subtitles]"
2000-09-07 until 2000-10-06
Institute of International Visual Arts
London, ,
UK
For
a period of three weeks over the summer, the Trinidadian-based
artist Steve Ouditt will be fashioning a Creole Processing Zone
(CPZ) at inIVA. Based on the Export Processing Zones of Jamaica
where migrant workers manufacture clothing and goods for the
export market, living and working in nineteenth-century
conditions, Ouditt is proposing a 'creole occupation' of inIVA's
new space.
For Ouditt, the creole is 'a doing that takes the
original and reshapes it' and his Creole Processing Zone will be
'a laboratory of the everyday where the sensual and sensible
revisions of signs, languages and texts are researched, studied,
proposed and made as affordable alternatives'.
