Indepth Arts News: "Lewis Watts: Photographs" 2000-09-10 until 2000-12-31 Neuberger Museum of Art Purchase, NY, USA
West Coast photographer Lewis Watts trains his camera on urban life, especially that
experienced by African-Americans. Most of his photographs have been taken in the
south or in East Oakland, California. They not only record what the artist has observed
but also are expressive of some of the faces and places of Black America.
His imagery
is made succinct by a careful attention to formal composition that combines found
reality with esthetical elements. Since 1978, he has been a Lecturer in Photography and
Visual Studies in the College of Environmental design at University of California,
Berkeley. Curated by Judy Collischan, Ph.D., Neuberger Museum of Art Associate
Director for Curatorial Affairs. Funded, in part, by the Friends of the Neuberger
Museum of Art and the Westchester Arts Council.
