"BILL VIOLA"
2000-09-15 until 2000-12-07
Detroit Institute of Art
Detroit, MI, USA

This exhibition presents the work of Los Angeles artist Bill Viola featuring three video installations, as well as working drawings and other examples. Viola is widely acknowledged as a leading video artist on the international scene. His installations – total environments that envelop the viewer in image and sound – employ sophisticated state-of-the-art technologies distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity.

Viola’s single channel works have been distributed and broadcast around the world. The installation Nine Attempts to Achieve Immortality is a highlight, along with the premier of his latest work, Eternal Return.

Bill Viola is the DIA’s contribution to an area-wide collaboration titled VideoCulture: Three Decades of Video Art. This first-of-a-kind effort joins the forces of 11 museums, galleries and arts and educational organizations in metropolitan Detroit to examine video art and its impact on contemporary culture.
