"Proscenium: A Neon Installation by Stephen Antonakos"
2000-09-24 until 2001-01-07
Neuberger Museum of Art
Purchase, NY, USA

The Neuberger Museum of Art's massive Theater Gallery will be transformed with colored lines of light conceived by Stephen Antonakos, a distinguished artist who works in neon. Antonakos, whose career spans five decades, is known for enlivening public and private spaces with sensations that combine pleasure with spirituality. His unique work bridges the categories of drawing (line), painting (color), and sculpture (three-dimensional space).

Born in Greece, Antonakos came to this country 70 years ago. He first showed his distinctive work with neon in 1967. By combining elements of minimal form with engaging color, Antonakos enlivens public and private spaces with sensations of pleasure and spirituality. His work has been featured in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, and in the 1978 Sao Paulo International Biennial and the 1997 Venice Bienniale. Mr. Antonakos will be awarded the Neuberger Museum of Art's Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual Gala on November 4, 2000.
