"Radcliffe Bailey: The Magic City"
2000-10-08 until 2000-12-31
Birmingham Museum of Art
Birmingham, AL,
USA United States of America
An exhibition of new
paintings by Radcliffe
Bailey, an Atlanta-based
contemporary artist.
Bailey’s highly
personalized painting
style uses mixed media to
merge aspects of his
African- American
cultural experience with
emblematic components
of expressionist painting.
In order to create this
body of work specifically
for the BMA, Mr. Bailey
closely studied the
African art collection at
the BMA and integrated this referential imagery with his own dense
pictorial allusive imagery; a dialogue between image and object
arises between the African presence and its African-American
transcription. The Magic City (a favorite Birmingham moniker) will
be a record of Bailey’s artistic discourse with Birmingham and will
allow audiences to experience one artist’s interpretation of the
layered, intersecting social and cultural histories of this city.
