"The Art of the Puzzle: Astounding and Confounding"
2000-10-15 until 2001-01-07
Katonah Museum of Art
Katonah, NY,
USA United States of America
This major exhibition should please the whole family:
105 jigsaw puzzles. 237 mechanical puzzles! Each one
has its own story. Each one is a challenge. There are
beautifully crafted wooden puzzles, tantalizing
impossible puzzles, puzzles to hone manual dexterity,
vanishing puzzles, and many more.
The second half of this exhibition traces the evolution of
the jigsaw puzzle, a long-lived favorite dating from 1760,
when a London mapmaker created the first dissected
map for teaching geography.
Will Shortz, Crossword Editor of The New York Times,
prefaces catalogue essays by curators Jerry Slocum and
Anne D. Williams.
Major funding for this exhibition was provided by the New York
Council for the Humanities.
