"Yasuhiro Ishimoto Photographs: Traces of Memory
"
2000-10-21 until 2001-01-03
Cleveland Museum of Art
Cleveland, OH,
USA
Though he was born in San Francisco in 1921, Yasuhiro Ishimoto spent most of his childhood in Japan, returning to the
United States in 1939. After World War II he studied with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design
(founded as the “New Bauhaus” in the 1930s) in Chicago, and became a leading modernist.
He moved back to Japan in the
1960s to teach photography and has resided there since, earning acclaim as a major figure of his generation. This selection of
recent work concentrates on his evocative, abstract studies of clouds, leaves, and footprints.
