Indepth Arts News:
"INSTRUMENTAL: An exhibition of Australian luthiers"
2000-10-20 until 2000-11-18
Craft Victoria
FITZROY, VI,
AU Australia
Australian stringed instrument makers are widely regarded but rarely
displayed in their own right. Instrumental offers an insight into the
craft and ideology at play in violin making. On the one side, there are
luthiers who follow the classical traditions and focus on fine details such
as the scrolls and purfling that will be on display in the gallery.
On the
other hand, there are violin makers who seek new forms and materials,
particularly Australian timbers such as King Billy pine. Both sides will be
represented in Instrumental, along with a resident luthier who will complete
a violin over the course of the exhibition.
