The manner in which the figures are shown, as well
as the way in which the panels are painted, reflects a craft that has existed
for centuries in eastern Europe and Asia. This exhibition includes Russian
icons dating from the 17th through early 20th centuries. These hand-painted,
holy images are richly embellished with silver gilt, gold vermeil, colored
enameling, and gold-leaf frames containing semi-precious stones.

The term icon derives from the Greek word eikon, meaning likeness or
image. Collector Daniel R. Bibb of Atlanta, Georgia has assembled a group of
traditional icons—paintings on wooden panels that depict sacred members of
the Christian hierarchy.
