Indepth Arts News:
"Paul McCarthy"
2000-11-12 until 2001-01-21
Museum of Contemporary Art, LA
Los Angeles, CA,
USA
The first American museum survey of the work of Los
Angeles artist Paul McCarthy will bring together more than
100 works from over 30 years of the artist’s career. The
exhibition will incorporate a wide range of media, including
large-scale video installation, sculpture, photography,
drawing, and video.
Working from a pioneering fusion of
sculpture and conceptually based performance, McCarthy is
one of the most influential yet least recognized artists in the
United States today. While his architectural installations
incorporating video and performance artifacts have received
critical and curatorial attention, few viewers are familiar with
his artistic evolution or with the impact his work has had on
two generations of Los Angeles artists. Organized by the
New Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition is
coordinated by MOCA chief curator Paul Schimmel.
