"Alan Davie"
2000-11-11 until 2001-01-14
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Edinburgh, ,
UK United Kingdom
Alan Davie was born in Grangemouth in 1920
and studied at Edinburgh College of Art in the
late 1930s. A pioneer of Abstract Expressionism,
he became one of the most highly regarded
European artists of the post-war era. In 1997 the
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
purchased four major paintings of the 1950s and
1960s, and at the same time the artist donated a
large number of oils, drawings and prints.
Thisexhibition, which celebrates Davie's eightieth
birthday, is drawn entirely from the Gallery's
unrivalled holding of his work. It features some
twenty-five large oil paintings, as well as
gouaches, drawings and prints dating from 1939
to the present day. The exhibition is accompanied
by a fully illustrated colour catalogue.
