2000-11-19 until 2000-12-15
Mildura Arts Centre
MILDURA, VI,
AU Australia
Mildura Palimpsest is an opportunity for artists and scientists to meet,
discuss, explore, present and engage. It is an opportunity to present new
work or works in progress and meet fellow artists and scientists in a
creative atmosphere.
Palimpsest is a concept that incorporates all facets of our landscape. In
this context we understand that seemingly different fields of human pursuit,
such as art and science, are inextricably linked.
Since its inception in 1998 Mildura Palimpsest, has developed into a major
national event featuring an Arts Exhibition, a Science and Art Symposium and
an Artists Forum.
The fourth Mildura Palimpsest will build on this success, with artists and
scientists from Australia and overseas coming to Mildura during April/May
2001 to install/show new work and explore issues facing regional Australia.
Importantly the Mildura Palimpsest #4 Exhibition & Science/Art Symposium
will coincide with the Second National Regional Galleries Summit to be held
from 17 - 20 April 2001.
Presented work must respond to the theme of Palimpsest, which is:
writing on an old parchment (the land) which has been obliterated
(indigenous culture, old mines, water channels etc) and written over (new
sub-divisions, intensive farming, industry etc).
In former Palimpsests work has responded to patterns of development,
salinity, water, social change, mapping, land degradation, previous work
from the Mildura Sculpture triennials, native species extinction and a range
of contemporary art issues.
