"STAR STRUCK: 1,000 YEARS OF THE ART AND SCIENCE OF ASTRONOMY
"
2000-12-01 until 2001-05-13
Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens
San Marino, CA,
USA
Mankind's changing conceptions of the heavens over the past millennium will be explored in this exhibition, which showcases
approximately 120 rare books and manuscripts from The Huntington's collection, most of them richly illustrated. Included are works by
Ptolemy, Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Kepler, Hubble, Einstein and others.
Also featured are items on loan from several other
institutions, such as an authentic moon rock from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), medieval manuscripts
from the J. Paul Getty Museum, dramatic photographs of deep space and our own galaxy from Jet Propulsion Laboratory and
California Institute of Technology, vintage and state-of-the-art telescopes from Caltech and Celestron, and images from the Carnegie
Observatories, the Keck Observatories, and the Space Telescope Science Institute. In addition to viewing items on display, visitors will
be able to explore, on CD and video, classic high points in the history of astronomy at series of computer stations donated through the
generosity of IBM.
