"Little Treasures : Northern and Italian Paintings of the 16th and 17th Centuries."
2000-12-13 until 2001-03-11
Detroit Institute of Art
Detroit, MI,
USA
Among those paintings that often remain off view are several small works of excellent quality.
This exhibition places on view a number of choice paintings representing the 16th century
Renaissance and 17th century Baroque periods in Italy and the Low Countries (Belgium,
Luxembourg and the Netherlands).
Included are little-known works associated with Correggio, Annibale Carracci and Pietro da
Cortona as well as a number of Dutch paintings including two associated with Rembrandt.
Several of the exhibited pictures are painted on copper, a support that enabled painters to
create highly finished works in exquisite detail. Their smooth, enamel-like surface lends an
aura of costliness and refinement long sought after by discerning collectors.
