The Third Shanghai Biennale open on November 6th of this year. Actually, this was the first international Biennale in Shanghai. It was believed to be the biggest contemporary international art event in China so far. There were a total of 67 artists participating.

Almost half (31) came from outside of China, such as Matthew Barney (U.S.), William Kentridge (South Africa), Emily Kane Kngwarreya (Australia), Sarkis (Turkey), Anish Kapoor (India/England), Funakoshi Katsura (Japan), and Heri Dono (Indonesia), and so on. Also included were Chinese artists living around the world, such as Cai, Guo-Qiang (U.S.A.), Huang, Yong-Ping (France), and Yan, Pei-Ming (France), etc. Compared with the previous Biennales, the art forms were much more varied, including paintings, multi-media, installation, video art, and conceptual art, etc. Also, there was a two-day international Symposium taking place at the Museum. Many art critics, historians, and curators from around the world participated. The theme of the Symposium was Cultural Fusion.
