The Third Shanghai Biennale open on November 6th of this year. Actually, this was the
first international Biennale in Shanghai. It was believed to be the biggest contemporary
international art event in China so far. There were a total of 67 artists participating.
Almost half (31) came from outside of China, such as Matthew Barney (U.S.), William
Kentridge (South Africa), Emily Kane Kngwarreya (Australia), Sarkis (Turkey), Anish
Kapoor (India/England), Funakoshi Katsura (Japan), and Heri Dono (Indonesia), and so
on. Also included were Chinese artists living around the world, such as Cai, Guo-Qiang
(U.S.A.), Huang, Yong-Ping (France), and Yan, Pei-Ming (France), etc. Compared with
the previous Biennales, the art forms were much more varied, including paintings,
multi-media, installation, video art, and conceptual art, etc. Also, there was a two-day
international Symposium taking place at the Museum. Many art critics, historians, and
curators from around the world participated. The theme of the Symposium was Cultural
Fusion.
