"A VIEW ON SURINAM: Drawings and dioramas by Gerrit Schouten"
2000-12-26 until 2001-03-18
Teylers Museum
Haarlem, ,
NL Netherlands
In collaboration with the Surinam Museum in Parimaribo, the Teyler Museum hosts an
exhibition featuring the local Creole artist Gerrit Schouten (1779-1839). Schouten is primarily
known in the Netherlands for his interesting dioramas, vibrant three-dimensional structures of
painted papier-mache showing a range of topics such as slave dances, Indian villages and
plantations.
Fourteen of these dioramas are on display, as well as almost ninety colourful
botanical and zoological drawings by Schouten. Several drawings and etchings of other
19th-century artists complement the work of this interesting artist. The exhibition presents the
visitor with the opportunity to glance into the lively society of this former Dutch colony.
Moreover, it beautifully illustrates the cultural and natural richness of Surinam.
