"Marian Dale Scott, 1906 - 1993: Pioneer of Modern Art"
2000-12-16 until 2001-03-18
Art Gallery of Hamilton
Hamilton, ON,
CA Canada
The paintings of Marian Dale Scott are among the most exciting visual
statements to have emerged from Montreal during the thirties and forties. As a
friend and associate of artist John Lyman and a founding member of the
Contemporary Arts Society of Montreal (1939) Scott occupied a central place
within Montreal's English speaking intellectual circles.
This retrospective
exhibition brings together over sixty paintings and works from experiments in a
figurative modern language to pure abstraction. Particular attention is paid to
Scott's work from the thirties and forties, a germane and critical period in which
she produced many of her most innovative canvases and that today serves to
place her within the most progressive artistic circles of her day.
