Indepth Arts News:
"Sigmar Polke: Music of Unclear Origin"
2001-01-13 until 2001-03-18
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Edinburgh, ,
UK United Kingdom
Sigmar Polke is one of Germany's foremost painters. He
came to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, alongside
Gerhard Richter, with witty works similar in style to the
Pop Art being made in Britain and America at the same
time. His works borrow freely from numerous and widely
varying sources, including advertising and popular
culture, combining a range of different styles and subjects.
This exhibition, toured by the Institute for Foreign
Cultural Relations in Stuttgart, presents a group of forty
recent gouaches that form a distinct and lively series. This
will be the first time that such a large number of works by
Polke will be shown in Scotland. The exhibition is
accompanied by a beautifully produced catalogue.
