"Video Art"
2001-01-17 until 2001-02-04
Bishop's University Art Gallery
Lennoxville, QC, CA

Bishops University Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition Video Art, which will run from January 17 until February 4, 2001. An eclectic selection of videos by contemporary artists will run continuously in the Art Gallery. Two evenings dedicated to video projections at Centennial Theatre will also accompany the exhibition: Tuesday January 23rd at 7pm and Tuesday January 30th at 7pm. Come and discover different aspects relating to the history of video art, an art form, which emerged in the 1970s and has since become a well-established artistic medium.

The first video presentation, entitled Speaking Bodies is a compilation of fourteen videos which explore such questions as, how does the body relate to the mouth and the mouth to the body? And is the voice always located in a single part of the body? The second video, which is currently in the last leg of its national tour, is composed of two parts: V is for Video: 1999, and V is for Video: Retrospective. V is for Video has been presenting student video art since 1983 in an annual Toronto festival. This national tour provides an opportunity to examine the legacy of video art from artists who are now established in a Canadian (and international) art community, and from current students who are continuing the tradition. It is in this tradition, within the larger Canadian Art context, that we present this work. Video is an exciting and innovative artistic medium, whether the approach is conceptual or narrative, video mediates the body, cultural identity, memory and social ideology.

The opening reception will be held in the Bishop’s University Art Gallery on Wednesday January 17, 2001 from 5pm to 7pm. The exhibition will run from January 17 until February 4, 2001. The video projections at Centennial Theatre:

* Speaking Bodies, presented by Gallery 101 and curated by Nicole Gingras, will be shown on Tuesday January 23rd at 7pm.

* V is for Video National Tour, presented by Mark Schilling will be shown the following Tuesday, January 30th at 7pm.

Bishop’s University Art Gallery would like to acknowledge the support of Le Centre Mayrand et Frères ltée in Lennoxville for their generous financial contribution.
