"Steve Giovinco: Myth of the Everyday"
2001-01-20 until 2001-04-08

Self-portraits and portraits of male artists' female lovers are two of the oldest themes in the history of art. They are also
a subjects where the artist often makes his most personal and revealing statements. In his series Myth of the Everyday,
Steve Giovinco applies the process of digital photography and web technology to take on the intricacies of daily emotions
and the trope of the artist as a subject of his own work.
The modern age is defined by the increasing presence of technologically controlled lifestyles. The pace of innovation
has turned the urban landscape into the domain of spectacle. Through faxes, cell phones and the internet, personal
relationships are developed via machines. Giovinco acknowledges this shift manipulating the process of photography to
make more intimate and interactive portraits. However, he shuns the digital impulse towards spectacle and instead he
purposefully foregrounds the unspectacular: the quotidian experiences and emotions that constitute everyday relationships. It
is through his intense focus that Giovinco inscribes everyday moments between couples with their own sense of drama,
importance and monumentality.
