Indepth Arts News: "Sol LeWitt: Incomplete Open Cubes/MATRIX 143" 2001-01-27 until 2001-04-29 Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Hartford, CT, USA United States of America
The minimal and conceptual artist Sol LeWitt is one of the most influential living
American artists. His sculptures-or structures, as he calls them-defined the movement
away from representation into intellectually rigorous and elementally beautiful abstraction.
This exhibition assembles selections from Variations on an Incomplete Open Cube
(1974), a series of 122 sculptures now scattered throughout the world, for the first time.
The works will be installed throughout the museum, stimulating comparisons with art of
earlier centuries. Coinciding with the LeWitt retrospective at the Whitney Museum of
American Art, this show pays tribute to the artist whose relationship with the Wadsworth
Atheneum began with the art classes he took at the museum as a child.
