"Whitfield Lovell: Portrayals"
2001-01-28 until 2001-06-17
Montclair Art Museum
Montclair, NJ,
USA
This traveling exhibition organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art features a new body of work by artist Whitfield Lovell. His latest format includes figurative imagery of one or more persons drawn on old wooden planks. These 17 charcoal on wood works are set against a wall and surrounded by antique, found objects. The exhibition will be on view through June 17, 2001. Vintage photographs still provide a basis for many of Lovell‚s new pieces, inspiring environmental assemblages. He motivates speculation about the subjects‚ lives and experiences. A sense of personal history is incorporated into these assemblages that reflects the artist‚s African-American heritage. Lovell was born in 1959 and grew up in the Bronx. His mother‚s family is from the South and his father‚s is from the Barbados. He graduated in 1981 from Cooper Union and has traveled extensively in Europe and Africa.
Lovell‚s work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the Jersey City Museum.
