"Eileen Perrier: The Black Hair and Beauty Show Photography"
2001-02-03 until 2001-03-25
Centre of Attention
London, , UK United Kingdom

Every year Eileen Perrier visits the Afro Hair and Beauty Show which takes place at Alexandra Palace and within this preordained context she has been taking portraits of women who come to the show. The artist has also been collecting selected hair products. Their designs often deal with brash stereotypes, some evocative, some very cheaply manufactured ranging from lush, sweetly fragrant pomades to the dubious skin lightener.

This uneasy mix of Beaudelaire‚s „Blue hair, pavilion of tense darkness, confounding essences: Coconut oil, musk and tar, the big money making industry that is Afro Hair, and the relaxed environment of the venue is approached in a simple and direct fashion by the artist.

Eileen Perrier studied photography at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design and at the Royal College of Art where she graduated in 2000. She has exhibited at the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery (1996, 1997, 1999) and has an upcoming group show at the Pump House in Battersea. This is her first solo show. She has contributed to several magazines including Revue Noire and Creative Camera. She received the National Magazine Company Award and the Egg Award, both in 1999.
