Calligraphy is the most highly esteemed and the most universal of all Islamic art forms. In no other time or place did the art of Islamic calligraphy rise to the heights it reached in the Ottoman period in Istanbul. Ottoman Calligraphy is the first major international exhibition to celebrate this splendid art.

The seventy-one richly illuminated manuscripts and handsome calligraphic compositions, which represent the work of nearly every outstanding Turkish calligrapher from the second half of the fifteenth century through the early twentieth century, are drawn form the important collection of the Sakp Sabanc Museum, Sabanc University, Istanbul.
