"Karin Preller: Family Album"
2001-02-08 until 2001-02-28
Absa Gallery
Johannesburg, ,
ZA South Africa
Karin Preller's collection of paintings titled Family Album, might at
first glance be mistaken for enlarged reproductions of family photographs.
Only on closer examination can one see the painstaking detail and skill of
the painter in creating this illusion.
Karin Preller writes: Photography is never innocent. Family photographs,
while seeming to be mere recordings of events in a family's history,
operate in the same way as any representation. By blocking out certain
features, what is not represented perpetuates myths about what is portrayed.
We compose photographs and project ourselves in terms of a preconceived idea
of familial relations. In this sense, the family album is always about the
family 'romance' and not about actualities.
Karin is currently studying her Masters degree at Wits University under the
guidance of Penny Siopis. The exhibition is the practical component of her
degree.
