"Twentieth International Contemporary Art Fair to Open Tomorrow"
2001-02-14 until 2001-02-19

Since 1994, the International Contemporary Art Fair has featured a programme that is now one of its major attractions for the
thousands of art professionals who meet in Madrid year after year. This program, devoted to ARCO's goal of supporting the latest
artwork and international collecting, puts the spotlight on the art of different countries within their cultural context, offering
prominent curators' visions of their current gallery scene, and its version of the art world's new international discourses.
By creating a high-profile exhibition space, with the presence of collectors and theorists in parallel panel discussions, ARCO has
established a singular framework for comparing and promoting today's different artistic and aesthetic trends in countries whose
creativity has, over the last few decades, made major contributions to the international contemporary art panorama. To date, the
programme has put the spotlight on Belgium, the USA, Germany, Latin America, Portugal, France, and Italy, ARCO’s Special
Guest Countries between 1994 and 2000.
Such prominent figures as Jan Hoet, director of Ghent’s Van Hedendaagse Kunst Museum; Kevin Consey, Director of Chicago's
Museum of Contemporary Art; and the well-known independent critics and curators Octavio Zaya, Joao Pinharanda, Nicolás
Bourriaud, and Achille Bonito Oliva – all have made their mark at ARCO with artistic projects and programmes that have tried to
offer a personal vision of the different creative discourses impacting on the international scene.
