"Performing Photography"
2001-02-15 until 2001-06-03
Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington
Seattle, WA, USA United States of America

With a selection of works from the Joseph and Elaine Monsen Photography Collection and the Henry's permanent collection, Guest Curator Michael Van Horn examines the complex genre of performance photography. An artist and photographer himself, Van Horn is also Curator of the prestigious private Monsen Collection.

Performing Photography features a range of images of performances, from those staged specifically for the camera to documentation of public performance works.

On view is a work by Vito Acconci for which he shot a photograph each time he blinked his eyes. Works by Tina Barney document, in the manner of straight photography, staged events intended to simulate real life. Images from Dieter Appelt, Lewis deSoto, Gilbert & George, Ann Hamilton, Zhang Huan, Anna Mendieta and Cindy Sherman are also included in the exhibition.
