"Fragrant Sweat: Photographs by Marzena Wasikowskaa"

Fragrant Sweat is the title of a photographic work compiled in a number of sets. The
photographs, stem from the artist's experience as a mother of an adolescent daughter,
Jess.
My working strategy in the production of this work is neither a candid nor a detached
social documentary style. I direct, but also collaborate with Jess and her friends, in
photo sessions that arise from premeditated interventions in various aspects of their
lives. There are also other groups of young people who have participated in these
tableaus. All are consious of the camera and there is an element of anticipation at
the possibility of a viewing of the outcome.
Jess and her contemporaries accept responsibility for their entries on this visual
record. The images have a veracity of the kind that is found in theatre. It has to be
distilled from an emotional response from the work. The prospect of autobiography is
ever present. The extensive editing has inevitability enunciated a world that I
imagine for my daughter with pleasure and that I anciated a world that I imagine for
my daughter with pleasure and that I anticipate with fear.
This work began in 1999 and has extended into 2001 with the support of an artsACT
grant.
