"XLANG LIQING: News from Hangzhou"
2001-02-25 until 2001-04-15
ShanghART
Shanghai, , CN China

The exhibition will show Xiang Liqing's computer manipulated photoworks. Many of these works could be seen at group exhibitions in and around Shanghai recently, but this is the first time Xiang Liqing's works are presented as a whole in a solo exhibition. The spectacular view of Art50, out of the large windows of the 50th floor of the Atlantis Pudong will add to this exhibition.

Xiang Liqing was born 1973 in Zhejiang. He graduated from the China Academy of Fine Arts (Oil Painting department), Hangzhou in 1995. Xiang Liqing lives and works in Hangzhou.

Repetition and Variation, the theme which made many of the traditional Chinese landscape paintings so spectacular and tranquil in the same time, is also the theme of Xiang Liqing's photo works. On Xiang Liqing's works you can find countless appartment buildings (Xiang Liqing took the photos mostly in Hangzhou) or parts of it mounted together in the computer to new immense constructions. They seem to consist of always the same buildings. But on the second look you can discover, that all this similar looking elements are still very different from each other. Each appartment, window, balcony etc is unique, you can discover signs of individual life on each square centimeter of Xiang Liqing's photos - fassades, which aged differently, windows which have been changed, clothes hanging on the balcony etc. It is a discovery of the singular, the personal, the unique in a very uniform world.

News from Hangzhou will also include Xiang Liqings most recent works. All the works of the exhibition will be documented on www.shanghart.com.

Xiang Liqing, 27 years old, was one of the five 'up-and-coming young artists' featured in last October's 'Time Magazine' on China's Youth.
