Horst: Portraits
celebrates the exquisite portraits of Horst P. Horst (1906-1999),
one of the great master photographers of the twentieth century.
In his sixty-year career, much of it spent working for VOGUE
and its sister publication HOUSE AND GARDEN, Horst's
name became legendary as a one-word photographic byline and his
photographs became synonymous with the creation of images of
elegance, style and glamour. His influence on portrait photography
was profound, inspiring photographers including Bruce Weber,
Robert Mapplethorpe and Herb Ritts.
This is the first major exhibition of Horst's
work since his death in November 1999, and the first ever to
focus solely on his portraiture. It brings together 150 portraits,
in black and white and colour, exploring the worlds of fashion,
art, intellect and society through six decades. Coco Chanel,
Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dali, Katharine Hepburn, Arthur Miller,
Steve McQueen and Paloma Picasso are all immortalised by Horst's
classic and elegant style, which is characterised by his use
of studio atmosphere, silhouette, dramatic lighting and highly
posed models.
