Indepth Arts News:
"The Draftsman's Colors: Fourteen New Acquisitions from Johns to Chong"
2001-03-03 until 2001-07-08
Whitney Museum of Art
New York, NY,
USA
The fourteen works in this exhibition—selected from 240
drawings acquired by the Whitney Museum since
1997—demonstrate the very different ways outstanding
draftsmen have expressed the underlying concepts of their art
within the limited range of color from gray to black.
The artists'
avoidance of strong color allows the viewer to concentrate on
their pure draftsmanship. Included are drawings in various
media by three of America's most prominent draftsmen, Jasper
Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, and Richard Serra, as well as emerging
artists such as Peggy Preheim, Robert Beck, and Joseph Havel.
