"GELAM NGZU KAZI - DUGONG MY SON: Limited Edition Linocuts by Torres Strait Islander Artists"
2001-03-05 until 2001-05-21
Australian Museum
Sydney, NS,
AU Australia
The first exhibition of limited edition linocuts by the artists of the
Mualgau Minnaral Artist Collective from Moa Island in the Torres Strait.
During 2000 the Elders of Moa Island in the Western Torres Strait agreed to
set up a print studio in Kubin Village so that four young printmakers could
record the island's special creation stories utilising their skill at
carving in lino blocks. Gelam My Son is the name the Elders have given this
exhibition which marks the first time that traditional Moa Island stories
have been recorded in a visual medium.
Gelam, the dugong, is the primary totem of the people of Moa. The name of
the exhibition is taken from the legend Gelam and his mother, Usar.
The exhibition has been organized in association with The Australian Art
Print Network, a publisher of limited edition, fine art prints by Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander artists. The prints in the exhibition can be
viewed at www.aboriginalartprints.com.auand can be purchased on line or at
the Art Print Network's gallery which is located two blocks from the Museum
at 68 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst.
