"BRASSAI: The Soul of Paris"
2001-02-22 until 2001-05-13
Hayward Gallery
London, ,
UK
One of the great photographers of the 20th
century, Brassai (1899-1984) is best known
for his chronicling of Paris in the 1930s and for
his classic portraits of such artists as Picasso
and Matisse. Brassai's extraordinary eye and
his interest in spontaneous human expression
have been enormously influential. This major
retrospective was conceived and organised by
the Musée national d'art moderne / Centre
Georges Pompidou, Paris to celebrate the
centenary of the artist's birth. It brings together
over 250 photographs, alongside his less
well-known drawings and small, sensual
sculptures.
'When you meet the man you see at once that he
is equipped with no ordinary eyes’'
– Henry Miller on Brassaï
