CGAC features a wide selection of Documentos Basicos (Basic Documents) created by Dario
Villalba (San Sebastián, 1939). These snapshots serve as a basis for a creative process, which finds
its personal expression in the coexistence of photography and painting. This pioneer in the use of
photography as an artistic medium in the mid-seventies, uses the photographic image (in its
dialogue with painting) as a base to convey sensations. From his earliest steps - he was present in
the XXXV Biennial of Venice in 1970 - he as advocated for this pictorial quality of the
photographic image. His personal way of dealing with the human body - eluding an eventual
classification as a portrait maker - defines throughout his thirty-year-long career a possibility for
research and innovation in the contemporary art scene.
Darío Villalba is one of the most widely acclaimed Spanish artists of the last few years. In 1984, he
obtained the National Prize for Plastic Arts. In 1994, the IVAM devoted a great retrospective show
to his oeuvre. His works are held in representative collections in the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in the National Gallery, Oslo, and, in
Spain, in the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM), or the Museo de Arte Abstracto in
Cuenca, the Juan March Foundation, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS),
or the Telefónica Foundation.
CGAC will produce a catalogue of the Documentos Básicos, which will prove a fundamental
instrument towards an understanding of Dario Villalbas artistic career, with texts of the artist and
Miguel Fernández-Cid.
