Currently in its sixteenth year, New American Talent has continued to showcase artwork in a variety of media created by emerging artists nationwide. This year continues this tradition including objects as different as a typewriter and chewing gum, both of which are included in different sculptural works in the exhibition. Organized by TFAA and selected by Anne Urn land, Associate
Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the
Museum of Modern Art, New York, New American Talent: The
Sixteenth Exhibition features 46 works created by 32 artists, 10 of whom reside in Texas.
Other states represented include Arkansas, California, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania and
Washington. Texas and California lead the selection with nine artists respectively. Due to the generous support of Philip Morris Companies Inc., TFAA was able to give Juror Merit Awards to five outstanding artists in the exhibition. They are: Georgia Goldberg (drawing) of Mill Valley, CA; Katherine
OConnor (painting) of Austin, TX; Amos Scully (sculpture) of Vallejo, CA; Zoe
Sheehan Saldana (fiber work) of New York City, NY; and Edie Tsong (mixed media) of Baton
Rouge, LA. New American Talent: The Sixteenth Exhibition is the result of a nationwide competition,
organized by TFAA annually, that gives exhibition opportunities and statewide exposure to emerging
artists across the country. The exhibition will tour for two years throughout Texas as apart of TFAAs
Art on Tour program, visiting areas with little access to emerging trends in contemporary art.
