"Caroline Davis: Water and Light"
2001-03-24 until 2001-05-20
Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
Montgomery, AL,
USA
Caroline Davis is an photographer from Tuscaloosa who takes black and
white photographs of baptismal subjects as seen from underwater. She
attends African-American baptismal rites throughout Alabama, and, often from
a vantage point in the water, photographs men, women, and children in the
emotional moments of this ceremony.
She often positions her camera so that
it is partially submerged, and sometimes even photographs from completely
under the water looking up at the person being immersed. This exhibition
includes at least 15 of these intimate portrayals of religious moments, and
will be on view in the Museums Weil Graphic Arts Study Center.
