Skinned is centred in the
domestic realm of memory - a personal
response to the process of prejudice.
Theories of cultural difference and
otherness are juxtaposed with the lived
experience that provides a
consciousness of a different kind. The
viewer is invited to consider notions of
influence, blame, judgement, present
actualities and future priorities.
While the personal account is past, its ramifications in terms of racism persists. The present state of violence which haunts South Africa sits uneasily alongside political attempts at reconciliation.
This installation was first presented at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. This project is part of the ongoing series - Reclonings which examines Australian meanings and context for reconciliation.
