"Jan Groth: A Retrospective"

As one of Norways leading artists, Jan Groth has had exhibitions within
Northern Europe and throughout the world, including a solo exhibition at the
Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1986. He is best known for his tapestry
work that extends the boundary of craftwork. Characterized by monochrome,
abstract designs, Groths works exhibit a warm, delicate textural quality that
contrast with their gigantic size and muteness, producing an inexplicable
beauty that cannot be found in paintings. Latest as well as early works will
be on view (tapestries, drawings and sculpture).
Many readers of the Hara Museum Review
will remember Extended Points: Three
Contemporary Artists from Norway, an
exhibition jointly organised by the Hara
Museum and the National Museum of
Contemporary Art, Oslo and held at the Hara
Museum in 1997. The same museums have
joined together again to present Jan Groth:
A Retrospective in 2001, held this time at
Hara Museum ARC.
Next autumn, the National Museum of
Contemporary Art, Oslo will organise a large-
scale retrospective of Groths work that is
scheduled to travel to museums in Europe
and North America. The present exhibition
was jointly organised as a preview of this
larger show. It features 16 large-size tapestries
ranging up to seven meters in length, 12
beautiful, linear bronze sculptures, and a dozen
or so drawings. Groths delicate, tranquil works
are sure to form an exquisite ensemble with
the simple spatial beauty of Hara Museum
ARCs design by Arata Isozaki. - Atsuo Yasuda, Curator, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art
