Indepth Arts News:
"Indian Painting"
2001-04-06 until 2001-06-11
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, ,
AU Australia
Drawing on the Gallery's growing collection of Indian art, this exhibition will
present a panorama of India's diverse painting traditions over several
centuries. Starting with the earliest painting in the collection, an early 16th
century folio from a Jain manuscript, the exhibition will conclude with works
by leading contemporary artists such as Bhupen Khakhar (born 1934) and
Nalini Malini (born 1946). Included in the displays will be fine Mughal
miniatures, lively narratives from the various court ateliers of Rajasthan,
examples of the increasingly popular Kalighat school, and contemporary
examples of the adivasi, or tribal and folk traditions. Themes included within
these different schools range from represen-tations of Hindu deities to tales of
courtly love and illustrations of musical melodies (raga).
